Some welfare recipients are ungrateful

Let me start off by saying I am in no way against welfare, SSI or any other program that helps people. Nor the people who receive these benefits. What I am against is the attitudes and expectations of many of these recipients. The programs themselves can be quite helpful if utilized as intended. My mother was a welfare recipient for a short period of time when I was a young child. I, myself was on welfare for almost 2 years, 10 plus years ago. As a single mom with no skills in the workforce was only able to land a minimum wage job. I worked hard and went to school full time while working so I could get a better paying job. It was difficult but rewarding. I work in human services and far too often see the attitudes and expectations I spoke of previously. 'Why they taking so long to get me my money?' Huh? Unless you were a tax payer and worked enough to contribute, it's actually someone else's hard earned money. And what do you mean, 'there's not enough resources for us.' Who said WE owed YOU anything. Come to think of it where do you get the idea that ANYONE owes you ANYTHING? Isn't it about time you take personal responsibility for your life? It's the tax payers who pay for your welfare, SSI, jails and prisons. A lack of gratitude. What I find interesting are those parents who some how afford to dress nice while their children don't. Here's a crazy scenario....welfare recipient who sells their food stamps for drugs, while high robs my house, goes to jail, we pay for them to be in jail and be fed and for the children to be taken by CPS and placed in foster care. Why must we take a drug test for a minimum wage job and welfare recipients don't? I've been on welfare, I know people on welfare who aren't like this. Unfortunately some are and it's sickening. I realize there are many people who don't abuse the system but the ones who do are going to eventually take it down and those who really need it and would use it right won't have it. I had to go back to work three months after a stroke because FMLA only covers 12 weeks of medical benefits. I wasn't ready to go back but I needed the insurance. Yet welfare recipients get free medical. The whole system is all screwed up and needs to be re-vamped. Just so there are no misunderstandings this blog does not include those recipients who are utilizing the system appropriately.
